It's cenral location. Interesting achitecture and decor. Well appointed residents' lounges. Obliging service.
The low ceilings were a constant hazard to a tall person like myself but I guess that's inevitabvle if you choose to stay in a building dating back to the 16th century.
Amazing building, it really was like stepping back in time.
Very musty sheets and pillows.
Really good/ Clean accomandation with bags of charm
Breakfast was ok could have been better mushrooms bolied
Liked the friendly helpful staff, did everything to help you and we would definately like to return despite being a little over our budget!
No well done
The location, the venue itself, it's very comfortable, the staff is nice and friendly with the people who stay there, the rooms are big and very comfortable, the history too is fascinating. It's defintely a place I would recommend for a nice gateway weekend.
On our second day we sat in the living room by the fireplace and a memeber of staff ruched to us to ask if we were customers of the hotel. I understand some of the rooms/facilities are reserved to the people who are staying there for the night, but he wasn't very friendly and welcoming, and as it happens we had stayed there for the night. Also when we arrived, someone kindly took our luggage until our room was ready so that we could go to lunch and come back without having to carry our luggage around the town. When we checked out, again we left our luggage because we were taking the train at 15.45. When we came back for our luggage a member of staff showed us where they were and that was it. It seems as soon as you've given back your key the staff doesn't really care about you anymore... A shame...
Excellent atmosphare together with good services.
Four poster, panelling, traditional atmosphere. Good breakfast.
The price. The room was cramped. The facilities, toilet, shower were awful. At £240 for a night, this was a disgrace. Love making, snoring, and foot stamping from neighbouring rooms kept us awake. this was a nice B and B but definitely not a four star priced sleeping accommodation. A rip off. No lamp shades in room. Economy lighting. Cramped conditions. Tiny tele. But above all cramped toilet, shower and sink. Think again about your rating.
Relaxing atmosphere, comfortable room and full of character. Excellent location in Rye with welcoming and friendly staff.
The only fault was the tiny bath! but this did not spoil things for us and we would definitely return.
Friendly staff and excellent maintenance of this fascinating building
The hotel has LOTS of character - the last major 'renovation' was in 1420 - a long time before Columbus even thought about travelling West to visit North America!! The bedrooms are quaint, and different.
If any suggestion could be made to improve, it would be that the hotel concentrate on some of the finer matters that might raise it from 3-star to 4-star - such as facecloths in rooms. The hotel was not cheap, and could have done a fair bit more to make us feel that we we were getting full value for the price we were paying.
Lots of character and great location. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Very minor quibble - shower head had no means of being fixed to the wall, so had to hold it and juggle with shampoo and shower gel!
Utterly charming. Even though it was April they had lit the fire as it was rainy and miserable weather. The building was lovely and the bathroom was large.
Breakfast was a bit slow.
the staff were very attentive, never intrusive. the building was fascinating and well maintained. food wonderful
difficult to find anything to dislike, cobblestones hard on the feet and the weather could have been better
Lovely setting, friendly staff and wonderful olde worlde hotel/inn. Ideal location for exploring the town of Rye and great to have somewhere to park the car! Very comfortable bed but beware if you are in room 19 which is at the top of the hotel - see 'dislikes' about the Mermaid Inn. Despite our adverse comments we really enjoyed our visit andwould stay at this hotel again.
We stayed in room 19 and although the room was all that we desired, being on the top floor we shared the company of sea gulls and their young - the screeching was constant throughout the night causing a very disturbed night's sleep. We had our evening meal in the restaurant and although the food was excellent it was slightly spoilt by an inexpert wine waiter who managed to overfill our champagne glasses on 3 separate occasions with the loss of approximately $5 of drink! Added to this was the layers of dust on the window sill and chairs, which had not been given adequate attention from the cleaning staff.
You can't do better for a piece of living history than the Mermaid Inn. It's a privilege to stay there. The staff is friendly, the bar serves good food and the restaurant produces food that is both a work of art as well as excellent to eat. We had a lovely 4-poster bed (with very comfortable mattress), a large bathroom and a splendid stay. This hotel was the highlight of our trip.
